The craft behind a proper clean
What does professional carpet cleaning involve?
Professional carpet cleaning removes the soil from deep in the pile, then rinses the carpet so nothing is left behind to attract new dirt. It takes far more care than a quick pass with a machine.
Most poor results come from a few common mistakes. The product is wrong for the fibre, too much water goes in, or the detergent is never properly rinsed out. We avoid them by planning each clean around the carpet in front of us. That might be a wool twist in a Gosforth home or a loop pile in a Durham student let.
Below we explain the methods we use in Newcastle and why. What happens on the day at home is covered under domestic carpet cleaning, and offices and shops have their own page on commercial carpet cleaning.

Fibre identification
Why does the carpet fibre matter?
The fibre decides which products, how much heat and how much water a carpet can safely take. We check it on site by look and feel, or with a small burn test on a hidden tuft.
Wool
Wool resists soil well but is sensitive to strong alkaline products, high heat and over-wetting. We use wool-safe products to avoid shrinkage or yellowing.
Nylon
Hard-wearing and easy to rinse, nylon responds well to hot water extraction. It does soak up dyes from drinks such as squash and tea, though.
Polypropylene
Water-based spills rarely take hold on polypropylene. Oily soil is another matter, and the pile flattens easily in busy walkways.
Polyester
You will find polyester in a lot of deep saxony carpets. It cleans well, but the soft pile can mat if it is not groomed afterwards.
Wool and nylon blends
This 80/20 mix is common in UK homes, and we clean it to suit the wool.
Sisal, seagrass and jute
These plant fibres can shrink or turn brown if they get too wet. They usually suit dry or very low-moisture methods only.
Cleaning methods compared
Is hot water extraction better than low-moisture cleaning?
Neither method suits every carpet. The right choice depends on the fibre, how dirty it is and how soon the room is needed, and we sometimes combine methods on one job.
| Hot water extraction | Low-moisture cleaning | Dry compound | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Solution is rinsed through the pile and pulled out with strong suction | A little solution is worked in by machine, then the soil is vacuumed away | An absorbent powder is brushed in to soak up dirt, then vacuumed out |
| Best for | Heavy soiling, most synthetics and many wool carpets | Light soiling, regular maintenance and carpet tiles | Water-sensitive natural fibres and small areas |
| Water used | Moderate | Low | Very low |
| Main drawback | Not suitable for some natural fibres | Less effective on deep, heavy soiling | Will not shift ingrained dirt |
Inside the process
How we carry out a carpet clean in Newcastle
The machine gets most of the attention, but the work before and after it makes the biggest difference. We work through five stages on each carpet.
Dry soil removal
We vacuum thoroughly first, because much of the dirt in a carpet is dry grit. Removing it stops it turning into mud once water is added.
Pre-spray
A pre-spray chosen for the fibre and soiling is applied, with extra attention on walkways and doorways. It is then given time to work.
Agitation
Brushing loosens oily soil and spreads the solution through the pile. That way the clean reaches down to the base of the carpet as well as the tips.
Rinse and extract
A neutral rinse carries away the soil and pre-spray. Strong extraction then removes as much water as possible.
Groom
The pile is brushed in one direction so it dries evenly and looks uniform, with less risk of matting.
Residue and pH
Why do carpets get dirty again soon after cleaning?
Carpets that look dirty again within weeks usually have detergent left in the pile. Many cleaning products are alkaline to help break down oily soil. If they are not rinsed out, they stay slightly sticky and every footstep presses new dirt in. Old spills can also seem to come back, as our carpet stain removal page explains. A thorough rinse is a standard part of our carpet cleaning in Newcastle.
Leaving the carpet close to neutral
We use a pre-spray at the right strength, then rinse thoroughly so the detergent leaves with the dirt. This matters most on wool, as strong alkaline products can change its feel and colour.
Brown marks after cleaning
Over-wetting can draw dirt up from the backing as the carpet dries, leaving brown tips or rings. Keeping the moisture down and extracting well helps prevent it, and so does good airflow.

Professional carpet cleaning FAQs
Common questions about professional carpet cleaning in Newcastle
Can't see your question? Get in touch
Is hot water extraction the same as steam cleaning?
Usually, yes. Most people who say steam cleaning mean hot water extraction, where a heated solution is rinsed through the pile and pulled out again.
How long does a carpet take to dry after professional cleaning?
It depends on the method, the carpet and the room. Low-moisture cleans tend to dry quicker, while hot water extraction usually takes several hours. Thick wool carpets and cold, damp weather can take longer, so open windows and gentle heating help.
Can professional carpet cleaning remove every mark?
No, although it removes embedded dirt, brightens dull colours and lifts many spills. It cannot reverse bleach spots, sun fading, burns, worn pile or permanent dye stains, and urine in the underlay may need extra treatment. We will tell you honestly what to expect before we start, and our carpet stain removal page has more detail.
Is professional carpet cleaning better than hiring a machine?
For most carpets, yes. Hired machines tend to leave more water and detergent behind, so carpets dry slowly and soon look dirty again.
Do you offer professional carpet cleaning outside Newcastle?
Yes. We are based in Newcastle upon Tyne and also cover Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham, including Gateshead and Sunderland. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, get in touch.
