Professional sofa cleaning

What does a professional sofa clean in Newcastle involve?

A professional sofa clean removes the body oils, food, hair and dust that build up in the fabric over time.

The dirt on a sofa is different from the dirt on a carpet. Most of it comes from skin, food and pets, and it gathers on the arms, headrests and seat edges. That is why they tend to darken well before the rest of the sofa does.

Covers vary a lot too. Cotton, velvet, microfibre and leather each react in their own way to water and cleaning products. We clean sofas in your home across Newcastle upon Tyne, so nothing has to be moved, and armchairs, dining chairs and headboards are covered by our upholstery cleaning.

What we clean

Types of sofa we clean

We clean most sofa styles found in Newcastle homes. Tell us what you have when you ask for a quote.

Two- and three-seater sofas

Fixed and loose-cushion sofas in fabric or leather, including seats, backs, arms and sides.

Corner and modular sofas

Large L-shaped units are cleaned one section at a time, with extra care on the busy corner seat.

Sofa beds

We can clean the sofa and its fold-out mattress together, which is handy before guests arrive.

Chaises and recliners

Chaise ends, cuddle chairs and manual recliners are cleaned carefully, without soaking any moving parts.

Scatter cushions

Cushions with fixed covers can be cleaned with the sofa. Washable throws are best done at home on a cool wash.

Leather sofas

Leather is cleaned gently by hand to lift grime, then conditioned where it suits the leather.

Fabric vs leather

How fabric and leather sofa cleaning differ

The method and the risks are quite different for each.

What can go wrongShrinking, water marks or colour run if the method is wrongDamage to the finish from too much water or harsh products

With leather, cleaning and conditioning lift dirt and help keep it soft. They cannot fix cracking, peeling or worn colour, though. Those problems need a leather repair specialist, and we will point out any existing damage before we start.

Common problems

Can pet hair, spills and grubby arms be cleaned off?

These are the most common sofa problems in busy Newcastle homes.

Pet hair and smells

We remove hair before any wet cleaning, because it clumps once damp. General pet smells usually improve a lot after a clean.

Food and drink spills

Tea, coffee, wine and takeaway spills are treated one by one. Marks that were blotted quickly tend to come out best.

Dark, greasy arms

Shiny patches on arms and headrests are a build-up of oils from skin and hair, and they need a pre-treatment to break the oils down before cleaning.

Everyday family marks

Crumbs, sticky fingers and felt-tip are common. Plenty lift fully. Older ones may only fade.

Our process

How we clean your sofa

We work through the same four stages on every sofa we clean in Newcastle.

  1. Check and test

First we look at the fabric, the care label and any marks, then try our product on a hidden area to check the colours hold.

  2. Vacuum and pre-treat

Hair and crumbs come out first, then stains and greasy areas are pre-treated.

  3. Clean

Fabric gets a method that suits it and the loosened dirt is extracted. Leather is done by hand, one panel at a time.

  4. Groom and dry

Brushing the pile helps it dry evenly, and we stand the cushions up so air can get round them.

If the lounge carpet needs doing too, it can be booked for the same visit through our domestic carpet cleaning. Everything else we offer for carpet cleaning in Newcastle is on our homepage.

Should you machine-wash sofa cushion covers?

Usually not. A zip on a cushion cover does not always mean it was made to come off and go in the wash.

A washed cover can shrink and never fit back over the foam, or come out a different shade from the arms and back. Where the label clearly says the covers are machine washable, follow its instructions to the letter. If you are not sure, ask us first.

Sofa cleaning FAQs

Sofa cleaning questions from Newcastle customers

Can't see your question? Get in touch

How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?

Most fabric sofas dry in anywhere from a few hours to most of a day. Thick fabrics and cold, damp Newcastle winters slow things down, while gentle heating and an open window help. Leather sofas are usually ready to use much sooner.

Can a leather sofa be professionally cleaned?

Yes. The leather is cleaned gently by hand to remove grime, then conditioned if it suits the type so it stays soft.

Will cleaning get rid of pet smells on my sofa?

General pet smells usually improve a lot. Urine that has soaked deep into the cushion foam is much harder to remove, and sometimes new foam is the only full fix.

What do the W, S and X codes on a sofa label mean?

W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent-based cleaning only, and W/S means either can be used. X means vacuum only, so the sofa should not be wet-cleaned at all. Tell us the code when you enquire, and our upholstery cleaning page explains more.

How can I keep my sofa clean for longer?

Vacuum the seats and gaps once a week. Blot spills straight away with a clean white cloth rather than rubbing them.

Can you clean my sofa and carpets on the same visit?

Yes, and it usually works out easier than two separate visits. List everything on the quote form and we will price it together for your Newcastle home.
